Mind the FUNDING Gap!

1A ARTS etc’s funding is threatened over the next few months. London Borough of Camden is not funding our services for local communities from January 2012. This leaves 1A ARTS etc with a funding gap. Can you help us mind the gap?

1A ARTS etc provides services for children, young people and adults of all ages. Please donate today. It’s quick and easy: donate by clicking on this link http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/finalCharityHomepage.action?charityId=1003054   and you can add 28% to the value of your donation through Gift Aid.

1A ARTS etc needs to raise £15,000 by the end of December to keep our services running. If 375 people give up their cappuccinos and lattes for one month and donate this amount to 1A ARTS etc you can easily help us to reach this target.

1A ARTS etc provides:

  • Holiday playschemes – high-quality learning experiences, friendship and a safe play environment for local children
  • After-school arts activities giving children and young people the opportunity to explore their creativity and develop social skills
  • Workshops and courses for young people provide valuable learning opportunities and open up possibilities when statutory youth services are being cut and closed
  • Volunteering programme for young people equips them with skills, training and experience which are valuable for their CVs and gives them the confidence to cope with an increasingly challenging jobs market
  • Services for older people offer excellent opportunities to get creative with visual arts including pottery

Help 1A ARTS etc to keep delivering quality local services for local people. Donate today!

Talking Objects at The British Museum

Monday 15th -Thursday 18th August 2011(must be available all four days) 12noon -4.30pm, 14yrs+ (Camden Residents)

1A ARTS etc working in partnership with The British Museum on a new project called Talking Objects.Talking Objects works with young people to discover the story behind famous objects in the collections. This year we will be looking at the Discobolous–a beautiful 2,500 year old statue from ancient Greece which shows a young man throwing a discus. Discus throwing remains an important part of athletics events today.

This object is famous worldwide and it is a key object for the 2012 Olympic Games.  We will be working with the playwright and BM trustee Bonnie Greer and Museum curator Ian Jenkins to unlock the history behind this amazing object and to create a response to it to be staged in the museum.

A key part of this project is film making and you will have the opportunity to work with a filmmaker to shoot and edit a Talking Objects film which will go online on the British Museum website.

Come and be part of this unique opportunity to discover, design and debate at the British Museum!

1A’s Film Group Scoop Limelight Gong

1A Film Group @ Limelight Awards

1A Film Group with best film award

Thursday 8th July saw aspiring Speilbergs and Scotts attend the third annual Limelight Film & Arts Awards held at the glitzy Troxy.

Considered the Oscars of short films, The Limelight Awards celebrate, promote and recognise rising and community based film makers across 12 categories. Our very own Junior Film Group beat over 175 other applicants as Limelight awarded their 10-minute short, ‘Generation Change‘, best film by under 17s!

‘Generation Change’ follows the adventures of a boy left on his own in a museum where he is taken on an unforgettable adventure. Inspired by the experiences of child evacuees during the Second World War, the short film was researched, scripted, directed and edited by the group during three-months of excellent film and drama based courses held at 1A ARTS Etc with funding from First Light and BBC’s Children In Need.

The Group (pictured) were in attendance to pick up their gong. Ciaran Mahindru commented on the project’s success saying “A lot of things about the project have been really special. There’s so much dedication and time put into making everything perfect, because that’s what you want a movie to be – perfect!”

Hosted by MTV Base and Choice FM funny man, KAT, the awards boasted celebrities of stage and screen including Hollyoaks star Helen Pearson and performances from Gemma Mews and Britain’s Got Talent’s Peridot.

Congratulations to Sienna Blake, Badruddin Pouget, Ciaran Mahindru, Kai Mahindru and Milo Blake  from everyone at 1A ARTS etc!

Our next film project will start in January 2011 with Saturday workshops and filming during the half-term week of the 21st to 25th February 2011 [subject to funding].

Snoring boring half term? Not at 1A ARTS etc

Wondering how you’re going to fill those days this coming half term? Watched every DVD you own six times and run out of magazines (or coursework?!) to offshoot the boredom?

Well don’t stress, because there is a secret escape just round the corner on Holborn’s Rosebery Ave. For half term, 1A ARTS etc has lined up some fantastic film, art and design workshops to banish the half term blues and give you something to shout about when you go back into the class room.

Just be sure to book your place early by calling 020 7837 3332 or emailing: info@1a-arts-etc.co.uk

Bart Simpson started as a sketch, you know…

What do Bart Simpson, Tom, Jerry and Roger Rabbit have in common? One word: animation. Creative and enchanting, animation these days is aided by cutting-edge technology to take on a world of varying digital forms.

That in itself is interesting enough. What’s even more exciting, if you’ve got this far into the blog, is the chance for YOU to learn how to teach animation to the kids who frequent 1A ARTS etc in the hope to one day become the next Quentin Blake or Matt Groening. Specifically, we want to recruit and train 4 peer educators – 1 male/1 female aged 16-17 and 1 male/1 female aged 18-1 – to support and teach animation to young people aged 8-15yrs.

Intense one day workshops will be taking place in February. Besides a brilliant thing to pop on your CV, you’ll also receive a national volunteering recognised certificate (after supporting a few sessions) to show to potential employers, colleges or universities.

You never know – we’ve also been known to take on paid staff who prove themselves to be true shining stars in these sessions. So, if you fancy giving your career aspirations a boost and unleashing your inner animator, we want to hear from you.

As they say in the cartoons, “That’s All Folks”.

Cool, cultured and oozing creativity? We want to hear from you.

Gearing ourselves up for another exciting year, January has brought the need to blog about some unique new volunteering opportunities available at 1A Arts etc. Like last year, we’ve a calendar packed with arts-fartsy experiences, classes and workshops with our 8-14 year old budding Picassos (well, almost).

As a Creative Volunteer, you will assist the delivery of hands on, interactive workshops in anything from print design, pottery, film, photography or web-based creative materials using the latest technology. More than a fun night meeting new, inspiring young individuals, 1A Arts is a place where you will pick up a variety of skills to bolster your CV and help open doors professionally as well.

So if you’re creatively minded and want to master the art of mentoring and motivating, brainstorming and coaching, contact us for a chat to see how you can jump on board the 1A Arts etc bandwagon this spring!

It’s one New Year’s resolution you won’t get bored of.
